SUMMARY:Art Kiosk Exhibition - Epoch
DESCRIPTION:Artist : Steven Dellicarpini \nViewing Dates : August 15th – September 13th 2020 \n(please maintain proper six-foot social distancing while wearing a facial cover) \nAbout the Installation \nEpoch\, by Bay Area artist Steven Dellicarpini puts a spotlight on time. The ever present passing of time is a constant in our universe. It pauses for no one and when it is gone\, it is gone. Often lost in the moment\, time seems to be more apparent to all of us lately. With every passing hour we see increases in racial\, social and cultural injustices\, negativity\, and the pandemic destruction. For many people\, 2020 will be the hardest year they have ever had to endure. It is important to remember that time is neutral\, it is not inherently good or bad. Time takes on meaning by the experiences of the participant and observer. As time passes on during our “new normal”of 2020\, Dellicarpini’s Epoch reminds every viewer to take caution and not write off 2020. Dellicarpini states\, “We all get a limited amount of grains in our life. If the ones you are experiencing now are difficult\, try to remember the good ones. If the ones you are fighting now hurt\, fight back. If the ones from today seem meaningless\, give them meaning.” \nEpoch is a seven foot tall sculpture in the form of an hourglass\, constructed from a paper based clay\, steel and polycarbonate. 1000 pounds of sand start in the top reservoir and quietly and methodically disappear into the bottom portion of the hourglass over the course of a week. The work comprises almost 8 billion grains of sand\, one for every human being on earth. At the end of the week the artist replenishes the sand and the cycle continues. Viewing Epoch is intended to be meditative\, watching the sand fall while life\, thoughts and current events continue. This peaceful and calm artwork is a call to action on both personal and community levels. \nAbout the Artist \nBay Area sculptor Steven Dellicarpini merges his professional background in electrical and mechanical design with his fine art education in sculpture to create thought provoking and meticulously crafted art. Always building and creating\, Dellicarpini has amassed a wide range of skills over the years and loves problem solving especially for his own work. His comfort zone is in the workshop and foundry allowing him the ease to create in any medium. \nSteve grew up in rural Connecticut at a time when kids played outside with their imagination. Because of this\, his style is strongly rooted in natural observations and themes. His latest body of work is inspired by elements of time\, exploration\, and discovery. These inquiries result in intriguing investigations from other worlds. Most recently\, he is obsessed with finding new and unique ways to combine dissimilar materials in his objects. \nSteve plans on applying his technical prowess and vision in various creative outlets where he can continue to explore sculpture and other physical arts. \nFung Collaboratives Art Shows \nThe Art Kiosk aims to bring thought provoking Installation / Public Art to Redwood City\, CA and the Bay Area through a series f five week-long exhibitions\, throughout 2020. The initiative began in January 2019 as a nonprofit partnership between Fung Collaboratives as the curator and organizer\, Redwood City as the location and logistical partner\, and the Redwood City Improvement Association (RCAI) as the primary funder. Artists from the region and around the world were invited to realize their ambitious site-specific commissions in 2019. Each artist has researched the City\, it’s history\, and residents to conceive their new temporary installation so that each exhibition is meaningful and relevant to the viewers. \nIn this second year of exhibitions\, the curatorial focus has shifted exclusively to the Bay Area providing a much needed exhibition venue for the talented artists that call the Bay Area home. The artists are challenged to identify\, react and respond to the local environment for the inspiration of their site-specific commissions. Each exhibition promises to be thoughtful and engaging and is free to the public. \nWe would like to recognize the Redwood City Improvement Association as the sole funder the 2020 exhibition series along with the continued and crucial support of Redwood City. \nThe Art Kiosk is located at 2208 Broadway in Redwood City\, CA \n

SUMMARY:Art Kiosk Exhibition - Number Cruncher
DESCRIPTION:Artist : Shannon Wright \nExhibit: Number Cruncher \nCurated by: Lance M. Fung \nViewing Dates : September 13th – October 18th 2020 \n(please maintain proper six-foot social distancing while wearing a facial cover) \nAbout the Installation \nSince COVID-19 began\, numbers have been obfuscated to downplay the severity of the pandemic and to excuse inaction. Number Crunchers is Bay Area sculptor Shannon Wright’s response to the confounding\, shape-shifting quality of the data and vital information being delivered to–and withheld from–the public on any given day. \nPhrases\, whether read or overheard\, often inspire ideas for Wright’s work\, particularly when they contain complex\, nuanced contradictions. “Number crunching\,” a catchphrase that epitomizes the contemporary impulse to dominate through quantification\, triggered for her an image of scissoring\, hinged contraptions. Constructed from a few hundred wooden yardsticks\, the sculptural objects in Number Crunchers are inspired by scissor-lift cranes and mechanical linkage systems. Although each structure is presented in a single position\, each can be adjusted to expand or shrink. The yardsticks overtly reference “social distancing” tropes\, while the layered configurations suggest a cacophony of information and misinformation. \nShock and incredulity are often idea generators for Wright– but she aims to imbue each piece with an elegant internal logic\, no matter what the provocation for the piece. While Number Crunchers is a response to chaos and hubris\, Wright hopes that the piece will also emanate a mathematical serenity within the glass walls and dappled light of the Art Kiosk. \nNumber Crunchers was made during the shelter-in-place months of 2020\, using processes tailored specifically to the unique limitations of this time. \nAbout the Artist \nShannon Wright is a sculptor and installation artist based in San Jose\, California. Born in Baton Rouge\, Louisiana\, Wright grew up chiefly in Sydney\, Australia\, and then spent her formative years among the iron trestle bridges and turn-of-the-last-century hydroelectric power plants and foundries of Richmond\, Virginia. Wright earned her BFA in Sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University\, and her MFA in Time Arts from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is a Professor of Spatial Art at San Jose State University. \nShannon Wright has a longstanding fascination with modular systems and articulated connections. In the past decade\, she has created her own “ruins” and monuments\, in reaction to a society whose mercantile logic never ceases to disorient her. Wright is represented by ADA Gallery in Richmond\, Virginia. She has exhibited at Mulherin-Pollard Projects in New York; Untitled Art\, Miami\, and Scope Miami\, New York and London\, among other venues. She is a 2016 Silicon Valley Creates Artist Laureate\, and a recipient of a 2019-2020 Research\, Scholarship\, and Creative Activity Assigned Time Award from San José State \nAbout the Art Kiosk \nThe Art Kiosk aims to bring thought-provoking installation art to Redwood City and the Bay Area through ten\, month-long exhibitions during 2019. Artists from the region and around the world have been invited to realize their ambitious site-specific artworks – often with the assistance of local volunteers\, artists\, and vendors. The initiative was conceived and curated by Lance M. Fung. Donated project management of the exhibition series is provided by Fung Collaboratives. The Redwood City Improvement Association funded the initiative for the second year of 2020. Redwood City acts as the logistical partner and its Civic Cultural Commission awarded a small grant to support the efforts of participating Redwood City based artists. Please drop by for a visit 24/7 at 2208 Broadway\, Redwood City. \nFor more information\, schedule of upcoming exhibitions\, artist talks\, and all other events please visit www.fungcollaboratives.org \nThe Art Kiosk is located at 2208 Broadway in Redwood City\, CA \n
